KVS KRISHNA PERSONAL PROFILE

Krishna was born on 14th September 1933 and joined the B.T.S. in June 1939 as a hostel student at less than 6 years of age and studied under Maria Montessori and continued there till he passed the SSLC (1950). Thereafter Krishna joined the Central Hindu College (1950 – 52) and did B.Sc., (Ag.) from College of Agriculture (1952-55). Soon after he underwent training in Ceylon in Tea and Rubber Plantations (1956). On 1st January 1957 Krishna joined M/s.A.V. Thomas and Company at their Katary Estate, and subsequently at Sulton Estate, The Nilgiris.

In 1965 Krishna was promoted as Manager of Carady Goody Estate (Tea and Cardamom and Spices). During 1975 Krishna joined Estates & Agency (London) in their Ndu Tea Estate, United Republic of Cameroon as General Manager and returned to India after it was sold to CDC (1977). From 1977 to 1985 he was with the Travancore Tea Estates, managing 9 Tea cum Spice Estates as Chief Executive (Tech. Dept.). From 1986 to 1990, Krishna was Director and General Manager for UT Agri Agency, managing and forming 4 companies at Papua New Guinea. Krishna was deputed to Honduras by International Trade Centre, Geneva UNCTAD / GATT as Spice Consultant under the aegis of UNO – which he could not accept as he could not get a release order.

Krishna has done consultancy work in Guatemala, Uganda, Australia, U.K. and Scandinavia. Presently he is on the Advisory Board of ‘Plant Horti Tech’ and gives advice on high value crops. Krishna is a consultant for the International Society of Tea Science, New Delhi.

Krishna has published some 40 papers on Tea, Cardamom, High value crops; and a manual for cardamom growers. It took 28 years to compile a paper on ‘Eating Infused Tea Leaves in Saharan Africa, which was presented at International Conference on O’cha (Tea) Science, Nov. 2004, Japan. A innovation which could revolutionise the tea Industry. Apart from tea, Krishna has introduced new crops like Macadamia and Tea Tree Oil into India (1978 and 2002 respectively).Krishna captained the School Cricket Team and represent the College Cricket and Tennis teams.

The Theosophical training seems to have helped in managing 1500 African Workers in Cameroon, 1000 Melanesian workers in Papua New Guinea and Indian workers of 10,000 in Kerala and also in Sri Lanka, and understanding the various races and their cultures.

Krishna’s daughters, Jyotsna and Rohini had pet talking Minah, Monkey and dogs and Krishna had pet Gekkos.

Krishna’s father K.G. Rao has worked for leading companies in Malaya, Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) and Sri Lanka, as an expert on Rubber Plantations and as Advisor for M/s. A.V. Thomas & Co., (India) and was Secretary & President of Indian Merchantile Chamber of Ceylon *1945-55).

Krishna’s brother Ram and Sister Sita were also old students of BTS, as well as his cousin Ramana. Ram was a Mica Mine Manager and later of Copper and Asbestos mines and is an advisor for several mines.

KVSK is married to Rajeswari, a musician, and has two daughters. Jyotsna is married to Sashi Menon and has a 17 year daughter. The second daughter Rohini is married to Paul D. Agnew, a Senior Geologist with Rio Tinto Explorations, Australia. They have a son and a daughter.
